Vanni was a pupil of Arcangelo Salimbeni, as well as of Passarotti in Bologna and Giovannni De‘Vecchi in Rome. Between 1595 and 1601, he lived in Milan. He was an eclectic, having been influenced by Barocci, Beccafumi, Raphael, Sodoma, and the Carracci, ‚traces‘ of whose art can also be observed in the present painting, which is executed in a ‚fragmented‘ fashion and shows a richly nuanced palette.
